What Happens When the Teacher Changes Every Time

When you think about why the trial lesson went well, it was usually because of the person. The teacher called your child by name, waited for an answer, and smiled even when your child made a mistake. That is why you paid for the service.

But in the first week of regular lessons, someone else joins the class. The new teacher is not a bad person. Your child simply has to start over: give their name again, have the teacher check what they already know, and go through the period of feeling shy around someone new again.

That is fine if it happens once. It is different if it happens every week. Instead of learning English, your child repeatedly has to adjust to a stranger.

01How Long It Takes a Child to Start Speaking

Adults can exchange a few words in English even with someone they have just met. Children are different. They speak less until they understand what the other person is like. This is especially true of children in the lower elementary grades.

When children continue seeing the same teacher, they move past this stage. After a few meetings, they begin conversations themselves. They try to talk about what happened yesterday and ask about words they do not know. This is usually the point when they begin speaking more.

If the other person changes every time, they do not reach this point. Each lesson remains at the level of a first meeting, and the child continues to give short answers. If the amount your child speaks remains unchanged even after a long time, this is worth considering. The difficulty level or lesson structure could also be the cause, so check those as well.

02The Problem of Discontinuous Records

When the person changes, information about the child also disappears: what they struggled with last week, which topics they like, and which mistakes they repeat. This information is usually in the teacher’s head.

So there is one more thing to check: whether a record is kept after each lesson. If so, does the next teacher review it before the class? If written records accumulate and are handed over, the loss is reduced even when the teacher changes.

Without records, every lesson starts from the beginning. A child may keep making the same mistake for three months without anyone noticing.

03Two Meanings of “The Same Teacher”

Both arrangements are sometimes described as having the same teacher. Ask which one applies before signing a contract.

The arrangement on the right is not necessarily bad. However, parents have to manage the booking every week, and popular teachers fill up early. For households with two working parents who may easily miss the booking time, this is not the same teacher in practice.

04What to Consider Before Whether the Teacher Is a Native Speaker

Many parents ask about nationality first when considering a teacher. There is something to consider before that: experience teaching children.

When a teacher who has mainly taught adult conversation works with an elementary-age child, the pace may not suit the child. The questions are difficult, the teacher does not wait long enough, and when the child stops, the teacher moves on. This is not because the teacher is bad, but because the teacher has been doing a different kind of work.

You can observe this during the trial lesson. Watch what the teacher does during the 3 seconds when your child cannot answer and stops: whether the teacher waits, asks again using simpler language, or immediately gives the correct answer. This one response usually reveals most of what you need to know.

05Questions to Ask

Asking these questions during a consultation will usually get you clear answers.

Will the teacher conducting this trial also teach the regular lessons? Is the teacher assigned on an ongoing basis, or do we select one when booking? What happens if that teacher leaves? Is a record kept after each lesson, and does the next teacher review it before the class?

If the answers are vague, it means that point is not set out in the company’s policies. It does not mean the company is bad, but you can take it as a sign that the arrangement may vary depending on how the service is operated.

06Tablet-Based Learning Has the Same Problem

Because children study on their own, it is easy to think there is no issue involving people. The issue simply takes a different form.

The program does not change, but the person overseeing the child’s learning does. This includes the person who contacts you when your child falls behind and the person who reviews the report and gives advice. If a different person fills this role every month, no one knows your child’s situation.

The questions to ask about tablet-based learning are similar: who is responsible for your child, whether that person reviews the previous month’s records before contacting you, and whether those records are handed over when the person in charge changes.

07When Your Child Is Uncomfortable with a Particular Teacher

Even with a regularly assigned teacher, the teacher may not be a good fit for your child. This is unavoidable in relationships between people. The question is how soon you notice it.

Children usually do not say so directly. Instead, they may say their stomach hurts before class, ask if they can skip it today, or seem subdued afterward. If this happens two or three times, ask about it. Rather than asking what they think of the teacher, ask what they dislike most about the class, and they are more likely to answer.

If you confirm that the teacher is not a good fit, do not put up with it; request a change. If you dismiss it as your child being sensitive, your child may come to dislike English lessons themselves. When making the request, describe the situation rather than blaming the person—for example, that your child did not have enough time to answer or that the pace was too fast.
